Overly crowded teeth: This occurs when there is simply a lack of room within your jaw for all of your teeth to fit normally. When left untreated, overly crowded teeth can cause dental decay, an increase in chances of gum disease, and can prevent the normal function of teeth.

Widely spaced teeth: This occurs with abnormal continued growth of the jaw bone. When teeth are missing, this issue can also be caused by the other teeth shifting due to extra space. Spacing issues in teeth can cause some periodontal diseases.

Crossbite: This occurs when the upper and lower jaws are both misaligned. It causes one or more upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth, and can happen on both the front and/or the sides of the mouth. This issue can cause wear of the teeth, gum disease, and bone loss.

Overbite: What people commonly refer to as an “overbite” is known to dental professionals as “overjet.” It occurs when the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth. It’s typically caused by either genetics, bad oral habits, or over development of the bone that supports the teeth. This issue can lead to gum problems or irritation, and/or wear on the lower teeth and can cause painful jaw and joint problems.

Underbite: This occurs when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth. It’s usually caused by undergrowth of the upper jaw, overgrowth of the lower jaw, or both. It can also be caused by missing upper teeth. This issue can prevent the normal function of front teeth or molars which can lead to tooth wear. It can also cause painful jaw and joint problems.

<georss:box>42.4767505 -71.10570509999998 42.5362175 -71.03995609999997</georss:box>

Give Yourself a Beautiful Smile in 2012!

Sometime after the invention of the mirror, but no later than 1,000 B.C., ancient Greeks began using base metals and cat gut in a determined effort to take the smile provided by nature and make it better.

Today, Dr. Aubin shapes dazzling smiles while creating optimal form and function.
Orthodontics has come a long way in just a few thousand years. Children, teenagers, young adults, middle-aged men and women, seniors – all are taking advantage of the simplicity that distinguishes today’s orthodontics.

There are orthodontic solutions for every lifestyle and budget. Wakefield Orthodontic Care is devoted to building beautiful smiles by bringing teeth, lips, and jaws into proper alignment. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Aubin today! Call (781) 245-1001.

In order to determine your specific needs, Dr. Aubin will completely evaluate your mouth. This will likely include:

•Impressions of your teeth, from which models are made (these are useful for Dr. Aubin and will remind you exactly how your teeth looked before correction).

•Photographs of your teeth, face, and smile

•X-rays of your head and teeth

•Your medical health history and dental health history

Dr. Aubin will then carefully evaluate your specific needs and provide you with a treatment plan for correction. Following the recommended plan is important for proper correction.
When your jaws meet nicely and teeth are configured properly in your jaw, that's occlusion. When the fit's awry, it's called a malocclusion. About 2,000,000 Americans know malocclusion inside and out. So what's wrong with a little overbite? For 20% of us, it's a handicap, for 5%, it's a physical and mental hardship. That's why there's orthodontics.

The gist of jaws

The upper jaw, or maxilla, is part of the skull and it doesn't move. In children, the maxilla is joined at the root of the mouth by soft tissue that grows into one bone mass by about age 17. Our upper teeth are a little bigger than the lowers. We call the lower jaw the mandible. When the maxilla and the mandible work properly, they chew, grind, and tear our food, facilitate normal speech, swallowing, and basic oral health. When your jaws don't align well, you may not be able to eat, breathe or communicate normally.

Getting the bite right

Orthodontic theory, and attempts at bite correction, can be traced to ancient Greek and Roman cultures. But until dentists could agree on the problem, each rigged his own correction device. Some of these 19th century "designer" orthodontic appliances were fanciful, some merely crude. The early orthodontist Edward Angle classified occlusions into three types. His principles are still the standard today.

•Class I occlusion is a "normal" bite. Since there is argument what "normal" is, Class I could be defined as a jaw/bite relationship that seems to be okay and doesn't cause any problems, although there may be some tooth crowding caused by eruption of extra teeth or missing teeth.

•Class II brings us to true malocclusions, in this case, the buckteeth of Bugs Bunny fame. It's certainly more amusing as a cartoon than reality though. Class II lower jaws are usually small and crowded. Along with a protruding upper jaw, the chin recedes. Children with Class II bites, and adults, for that matter, seem especially subject to social derision. Aside from problems with keeping teeth clean, Class IIs can expect cruel jokes.

•Class III malocclusions are relatively rare (5%)and may include a jutting lower jaw and lower teeth that close in front of the uppers (think Dick Tracy). Treatment is complex, and may require bone surgery.

In any case, seeing your dentist on a regular basis is very important. In the case of Class IIs and IIIs, seeing an orthodontist could make a big difference in your self-esteem and make your life much easier.

With more adults seeking treatment their parents couldn't afford when they were youngsters, this is a very exciting time in orthodontics—we have a world of new orthodontic materials that work better and faster.

Heavy metal bands? They're passé. Most of us have heard the news about braces. They're lighter, smaller, easier to clean—dare we say it—almost comfortable. Plastics and bonding adhesives mean no more heavy metal bands around teeth. Wire and brackets can be "super-glued" directly onto the teeth (Look, Ma, no bands!).

NASA's missile technology has given us Nitinol, a "memory" metal that retains its shape better than stainless steel. Arch wires made of Nitinol exert a light, steady force that stands up to the push and pull of orthodontic appliances. And lingual braces, glued to the back (tongue side) of the tooth, are proving effective in closing moderate gaps. It's like having invisible braces.

A new breed of patient

The best part of new orthodontics for your orthodontist, though, is a willing, and eager patient. Home care is critical to any orthodontic treatment plan. Careful, constant cleaning, wearing your retainers, and avoiding foods that make a mess of all the handiwork is a must. Most adult patients appreciate the investment of time and energy and tend to go about home care with vigor.

If you're considering adult orthodontics, give us a call at (781) 245-1001 or visit our website http://www.wakefieldorthodonticcare.com/.

Whether nature planned your smile a little off, or a missing tooth changed the geography over the years, you now have the option of a bite made in heaven.

<georss:box>42.4509349 -71.12277710000001 42.50925590000001 -71.0762181</georss:box>

Top 10 Critical Things To Know When Selecting An Orthodontist

Orthodontic work is an investment in the future of your smile. And, like any investment, you'll want to do a little research before making a final decision on braces. These guidelines can help you choose the Orthodontist who's right for you.

1. Check the doctor's credentials.

Orthodontic dentistry is recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA) as a specialty. The dentist should also be licensed through the state dental board and be a member of the American Association of Orthodontists.

2. Investigate the doctor's training.

The best braces dentists didn't just go to dental school; they also completed extensive post-graduate training programs that focus specifically on issues of orthodontics. In addition, the best dentists regularly attend continuing education classes to stay up-to-date on new procedures and materials.

3. Start with a consultation.

Going in for a consultation is a great way to learn more about a doctor and practice. Consultations are generally inexpensive, and are sometimes even offered for free. Talk to the dentist before you commit to anything. Remember, it's your job to make an educated decision.

4. Communication is key.

It's essential that you be able to talk to your dentist - and that your dentist will listen to you! There's a lot of dialogue that needs to go into an individual long-term treatment plan. If you feel bullied, pressured, or rushed, then that's probably not the right dentist for you.

5. Know the different types of braces.

Gone are the days when there was only one type of orthodontic braces. If you're looking for a cosmetic option, you might bypass standard metal braces in favor of clear brackets, invisible braces, or Invisalign aligners.

6. Remember, braces aren't just for kids anymore.

More and more adults are having orthodontic work done every year. Some doctors specialize in child, teen or adult patients. Ask about the average age of the practice's clientele.

7. Look at before and after photos.

Take a look at the dentist's portfolio before you make up your mind. Pay specific attention to cases that are similar to yours. Make sure that the photos are of actual work done by the dentist, not just stock photos.

8. Don't pay too much - or too little.

Some dentists charge more by marketing themselves as high-end braces dentists offering Hollywood smile makeovers. Other dentists try to make up for poor materials and shoddy work by offering low prices. Beware the extremes.

9. An honest dentist sets realistic expectations.

Watch out for doctors who promise more than they can deliver. You want a dentist who will tell you what can and cannot be done for your smile. You need to know how long the process will take, what you'll have to do, and any complications that could occur.

10. Nothing compares to experience.

Much like other people, dentists get better at things the more they do them. Ideally, your dentist will have lots of experience with orthodontics in general and with cases like yours specifically.

Many children and teens (and some adults) don't know how to floss with braces. Or they think that they can't floss at all if they have braces. But that's not the case. In fact, daily flossing is especially important during the time that you wear braces because you're more likely to have food particles trapped in the braces, bands and wires, which could increase your risk of a cavity if the food contains carbohydrates (sugars).

Time Matters

Be prepared to spend three times as long on your oral care while you have braces on your teeth. Don't worry, it's worth the time-if you don't pay attention to oral hygiene while your teeth are being realigned, you increase your risk of gum disease. Plus, it can help your teeth look that much better when it's finally time to get your braces removed.

Steps To Follow When Flossing With Braces

Although flossing with braces is tricky, you can get the hang of it with practice if you follow these steps:

•Use waxed floss (unwaxed floss is more likely to get caught and shred in your braces), dental tape or a product specifically designed to clean around your braces, like the Oral-B® Orthodontic Brush

•Use enough. About 18 inches of floss should suffice

•Thread it carefully. Take the floss and carefully thread it under the main wire of the braces before passing it between two teeth. Then remove the floss and re-thread it under the main wire to pass between the next pair of teeth

•Be sure not to snap the floss-simply move it up and down gently against the side of each tooth

Parents: Do the flossing for younger children who lack the coordination to thread the floss under the main wire of their braces.

Foods to Avoid When You Have Braces

<img border="0" m$="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-B-lI7shGsOs/Thi7a_rzOHI/AAAAAAAAAFI/qSz1msdB4Rg/s1600/orthodontist+Northborough+MA.jpg" />
An orthodontic tip from your local Wakefield MA Orthodontist:

What To Eat and What Not To Eat When You Have Braces

Braces or not, it’s always recommended to eat a well-balanced diet for its renowned health benefits. But if you have braces, it’s important to avoid special foods that can increase your risk for cavities or damage your braces.

Avoid Sticky and Sugary Foods

Cut down on sweets, chips and soda. Sugary and starchy foods generate plaque acid and that can cause tooth decay and promote gum disease. Sticky, chewy sweets like caramel can also cause wire damage and loosen brackets.

Cut Food into Small Pieces

Cut healthy, hard foods like carrots or apples into smaller pieces. This makes them less a threat to your braces.

Stay Away From Hard, Crunchy Snacks

These types of snacks, including popcorn, nuts and hard candy, can break braces or make their impact less effective.

Bringing Teeth into Alignment with Orthodontic Treatment

The American Association of Orthodontists reports that in the United States 4.5 million people are wearing braces or other dental appliances to straighten teeth and provide a healthy, beautiful smile.

As many of us know, an orthodontist is a dentist with additional clinical training to treat malocclusions (improper bites), which may result from tooth irregularity and jaw issues.

Why Do Teeth Become Crooked?

Terry Pracht, DDS, past president of the American Association of Orthodontics says that both heredity and environmental factors can create crooked teeth and bite problems. Dr. Pracht mentions that hereditary factors include crowded teeth, teeth where there is too much space and malocclusions. He also mentions that crooked teeth can be caused by thumb sucking and tongue thrusting as well as accidents occurring to the jaw.

What are Treatment Options to Straighten Teeth or Malocclusions?

There are three stages of orthodontic treatment. The first is when appliances are used to gain space in the mouth. For example, palatal expanders are used to expand the width of the palate and lingual bars are used to expand the lower jaw. The active corrective stage is next when the braces are placed on the teeth. The teeth are then adjusted and then straightened and malocclusions are corrected over a period of time based upon the severity of the irregularity of the teeth and jaw issues. The third stage is the retention stage after braces are removed and when the teeth are monitored through the use of a retainer (removable or fixed) and semi-annual orthodontic visits are conducted to maintain the straightened smile.

Types of Braces

Braces from over 30 or so years ago included large metal bands that were enclosed and cemented around each tooth. Braces can be attached to the cheek side of the teeth as well as the tongue side of the teeth depending on what your orthodontist recommends to you for treatment. Braces, arch wires and bands can be colorful and a lot of fun for children, adolescents and teenagers to choose from.

Today, tiny brackets are placed onto the front surface of the tooth and are made of metal or ceramic. The brackets are bonded to the front tooth surface with a glue-like material and metal bands can be used on the back teeth. Arch wires are placed inside the brackets and are made of a heat-activated nickel-titanium source that can become warm due to the temperature in the mouth, which will allow it to apply constant pressure on the teeth as well as when the arch wires are adjusted at the orthodontist’s office.

Another newer alternative to braces is the Invisalign system which uses a series of clear removable aligners that are worn during the day and night to help in moving teeth into the correct alignment. When eating or brushing and flossing, the aligners may be removed.

Caring for Braces

Your orthodontist, dentist or dental hygienist will provide you with thorough instruction of how to properly clean your braces. There are many toothbrushes you can use both manual (specifically designed for orthodontic patients), power, electric or sonic. Ask your dental professional which is be best for you. Brushing should be conducted at least 2-3 times per day at a 45 degree angle in a back and forth motion. Be sure to remove plaque at the gum line to prevent gingivitis (inflammation of the gum tissue). Be sure to angle the toothbrush at the gum line and then gently brush around the brackets to remove plaque and food debris.

It is very important to clean in between your teeth with a floss threader and floss, a stimudent (tooth pick cleaner) or a proxabrush (interproximal cleaning brush) may be used if there is space between the teeth. Oral irrigators may be recommended to remove food debris and irrigate the gum tissue to remove disease and odor-causing bacteria that may be there if you have gingivitis. An antibacterial toothpaste and over-the-counter antimicrobial mouth rinses could also be used with the oral irrigator or alone.

How to Maintain a Smile After the Braces are Off

After your orthodontist has determined that your braces can be removed, it is very important that a retainer (a plastic appliance) be worn during the day or night as recommended by them. The retainer can be cleaned with warm water or toothpaste and a toothbrush after you wear it and placed in a plastic container when not in use.

See your dental professional for a twice a year professional cleaning and the orthodontist for regular maintenance appointments.
An improper bite doesn't look good. That is the usual reason that people seek treatment from an orthodontist. In addition, an improper bite causes difficulty in chewing. In people with crowded teeth, it can lead to more cavities or gum disease. Treatment of an irregular bite can improve your overall oral health and stabilize your bite. Incorrect bites are grouped into categories.

Common bite problems include:

Crossbite — Here, the upper teeth rest significantly inside or outside the lower teeth. A crossbite often can make it difficult to bite or chew. It also may cause the jaw to shift to one side as it grows.

Crowding — Permanent teeth may not have room to move into the right position: If there is not enough room for the teeth If the teeth are unusually large compared with the size of the dental arch If the jaw is narrower than it should be.

Deep overbite — This occurs when the upper front teeth (incisors) overlap too far over the lower teeth. In some cases, the biting edges of the upper teeth touch the lower front gum tissue and the lower front teeth may bite into the roof of the mouth.

Underbite — A crossbite of the front teeth is commonly referred to as an underbite if the lower teeth are ahead of the upper teeth. This may also be a sign that the jaws are not in the correct position. Sometimes surgery is needed.

Open bite — If your upper and lower front teeth don't meet when you bite down, this is called an open bite. This may make it impossible to bite off food with the front teeth. It also can affect speech. Because the front teeth don't share equally in the biting force, the back teeth may receive too much pressure. This makes chewing less efficient. It can lead to premature wear of the back teeth.

Spacing problems — Some people have missing teeth or unusually small teeth in a normal sized jaw. This can result in large spaces between the teeth. People who have lost one or multiple teeth may have uneven spacing because adjacent teeth may drift into the unoccupied areas. Braces can be used to shift the position of these teeth so the missing tooth or teeth can be replaced.

Treatment: Braces and Retainers:

Everyone has a slightly different bite, so treatment techniques vary. Braces are the most common approach. They help to move the teeth slowly by applying precise amounts of light pressure over a long period of time. Most orthodontic treatments occur in two phases:

The active phase — Braces or other appliances are used to move the teeth into proper alignment and correct the bite.

The retention phase — A retainer is used to hold the teeth in their new positions for the long term. In addition to braces, orthodontists sometimes use special appliances (called functional appliances) to direct the growth of the jaw in young children. These appliances are rarely used in adults. That's because they are not effective after growth is complete.

It is important to have a child evaluated by an orthodontist by the age of 7.

First, some of the problems parents should watch for:

- Mouth breathing

- Finger or thumb sucking

- Use of a pacifier past age 2

- Crowding

- Crossbite

- Spacing issues

- Underbite/overbite

- Open bite- Protrusion

- Early/late loss of baby teeth

- Speech difficulties

- Facial imbalance

- Teeth clenching/grinding

- Jaws that shift/make noises

Any of these habits and conditions have the potential to create future orthodontic problems if not identified and corrected early.

There are additional reasons for early evaluation. An orthodontist can identify problems regarding emerging teeth and jaw growth while some baby teeth remain.

Identifying a problem early means it can be treated early if needed. That can keep more serious problems from developing and in some cases, allow the orthodontist to correct problems that are best corrected when the face and jaws still are growing.

Early treatment also enables orthodontists to guide permanent teeth into optimum position early-on, correct poor oral habits, reduce the risk of trauma to the front teeth, guide jaw growth and improve the relationship between a child's lips, face and teeth. For more information or to schedule an evaluation please visit http://www.wakefieldorthodonticcare.com/

Invisalign True or False? Wakefield, MA

1. Invisalign is only for simple orthodontic cases. FALSE - Most malocclusions can be treated with Invisalign exclusively, or with a combination of Invisalign and short-term traditional braces. In October 2010, Align Technology, Inc., the makers of Invisalign, introduced a series of new features that facilitate the treatment of Class II (overbite) and Class III (underbite) malocclusions. Even patients requiring complex surgical intervention can be treated with Invisalign.

2. Traditional braces treatment is more stable than Invisalign. FALSE - There is no scientific evidence of any difference in stability between a case treated with Invisalign or traditional braces.

3. - Invisalign treatment takes longer than other treatment types. FALSE - Invisalign treatment usually can be completed in a shorter period than traditional braces treatment. Invisalign treatment takes about 12 months.

4. - Invisalign treatment is more expensive than traditional orthodontic treatment. FALSE - the cost of Invisalign treatment has decreased by about one third since 1999. Today, Invisalign treatment cost truly is comparable to the cost of traditional braces.

Straight teeth contribute to healthy teeth and gums. Properly aligned teeth and jaws may alleviate or prevent physical health problems. Teeth that work better also tend to look better. An attractive smile is a pleasant “side effect” of orthodontic treatment. An attractive smile is a wonderful asset. It contributes to self-esteem, self-confidence and self-image—important qualities at every age. A pleasing appearance is a vital component of self-confidence. A person's self-esteem often improves as orthodontic treatment brings teeth, lips and face into proportion. In this way, orthodontic treatment can benefit social and career success, as well as improve a person’s general attitude toward life. There are psychological aspects that are also important.
Invisalign is a teeth alignment system which consists of a series of computer-generated, nearly invisible aligners that fit neatly over the teeth. The aligners are made of food grade polyurethane and are comfortable and removable. Each aligner in the series is slightly different, causing your teeth to progressively move into the desired position.

Invisalign braces are used to treat several teeth alignment problems, including overbites, underbites, crowded teeth, crossbites and gaps between your teeth. Whether your smile needs minor improvements or more extensive adjustments, Invisalign can certainly help.

Invisalign uses a series of comfortable, removable aligners that gradually move your teeth into improved positions. Unlike conventional braces, Invisalign aligners have no metal bands or wires and are almost invisible.

Ask Dr. Aubin at Wakefield Orthodontics if Invisalign is a good fit for you!
